PEORIA (25News Now) – A white Christmas certainly adds to the excitement of the holiday season, but they come few and far between.
Thanks to climate change, our winters, especially December, are warmer than usual, resulting in temperatures too high to allow snow. Over the past 25 years, our average high temperature at Christmas has been 38 degrees.
But over the past 10 years, the weather has been much warmer when the average high temperature at Christmas has been 41 degrees, with a record Christmas high of 63 degrees in 2019.
We define a white Christmas as an inch or more of snow on the ground on Christmas morning.
Over the past 25 years, we’ve had seven white Christmases, which is a 30% average. However, over the past decade, we have only had two white Christmases, which is an average of 20%. The most recent was one inch in 2022. Snowfall on Christmas Day is a rare event.
No matter what happens the rest of this winter, count on a team of five, the 25 News First Alert Weather Team. We won’t shovel your snow, but we will tell you when you have to, because when we know, you’ll know.
