High school students from Carbondale, Mid-Valley, Scranton Prep and Valley View participated in the University of Scranton’s inaugural Data Science Day competition. Two Mid Valley High students took first place in the doubles category, while a Scranton Prep student from Jessup took second place in the singles category.
The interactive competition was supported by a National Science Foundation grant awarded to University Assistant Professor of Mathematics Joseph Klobowski, Ph.D. It included an educational introduction to data science and computer programs that will be used during the competition.
The day also included a luncheon keynote by Melinda Kleczynski, Ph.D., a postdoctoral researcher at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and remarks from Carolyn Barry, Ph.D., dean of the Scranton College of Arts and Sciences. University students majoring in mathematics and other fields helped in the competition.
High school students competed in the singles division and the doubles division.
In the individual category, Forty Fort’s Ethan Fenner, a senior at Scranton Prep, took first place, Jessup’s Vincent Yu took second and Wilkes-Barre’s Ryan Flem took third.
In the doubles division, Mid Valley High sophomores Giada Vanni of Olyphant and Zachary Bozza of Throop took first place. Scranton Prep seniors Logan Dixon of Factoryville and Sam DiNapoli of Moscow placed second.
