Tehran:
Newly appointed Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan Al-Shaibani called on Iran on Tuesday not to spread chaos in Syria but rather respect the will of the Syrian people and the country’s sovereignty.
Al-Shaibani said in a post on the X website: “Iran must respect the will of the Syrian people and the country’s sovereignty and security. We warn them against spreading chaos in Syria and hold them responsible for the repercussions of the recent statements.”
He did not specify which statements he was referring to.
In a televised speech on Sunday, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called on Syrian youth to “stand with firm resolve against those who have masterminded and caused this insecurity.”
Khamenei said: “We expect that a strong and honorable group will also emerge in Syria, because the Syrian youth today have nothing to lose. Their schools, universities, homes, and streets are unsafe.”
He added: “Therefore, they must stand firmly and resolutely against the planners and perpetrators of the security chaos and defeat them.”
Syrian rebels overthrew President Bashar al-Assad on December 8 after a 13-year civil war.
Iran spent billions of dollars to support Assad during the war and deployed its Revolutionary Guards in Syria to keep its ally in power.
Assad’s ouster is widely seen as a major blow to the Iranian-led political and military alliance that opposes Israeli and American influence in the Middle East.
