Minneapolis – Minnesota health officials are warning of an outbreak of a highly contagious disease: norovirus.
The Minnesota Department of Health has reported 40 outbreaks of norovirus, also known as stomach flu. This is nearly double the usual number for December.
As holiday gatherings take place, the risk of spreading the virus becomes higher.
Norovirus causes symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. To reduce the risk of infection, health officials advise washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before eating or preparing food and after using the toilet.
If you have had any of these symptoms within the past three days, you may want to skip hosting this year and avoid any food preparation.
Finally, bleach is your friend. Be sure to disinfect any surfaces after vomiting or diarrhea.
“It’s kind of the common-sense guidance that we’ve given for all viruses that applies this year as well,” Dr. Susannah Hills said. “Stay healthy by washing your hands, and avoid or limit contact with others who are sick if possible.” , assistant professor at Columbia University Medical Center. “If you’re sick, be aware of protecting those around you. And also be especially careful if you’re at risk, if you’re immunocompromised, if you’re particularly at risk if you get sick.”
The good news is that norovirus symptoms usually go away within a day or two without long-term effects. But if you get sick, stay hydrated.
If symptoms persist afterward, contact your health care provider.
