The Kraken’s Campbell debuts as the first female NHL coach
Seattle Kraken’s Jessica Campbell made history by becoming the first female head coach in NHL history as her team was defeated 3-2 by the St. Louis Blues.

McClellan, 57, who won a Stanley Cup with the Red Wings as an assistant coach in 2008, was signed to a multi-year contract to become the team’s 29th head coach. He has a regular season record of 598-412-134 over 16 seasons with the Los Angeles Kings, Edmonton Oilers and San Jose Sharksmaking the playoffs nine times. He was with the Red Wings from 2005-08 and left after their championship season to join the Sharks.
Assistant coach Bob Boughner was also fired, and Trent Yawney was hired as assistant coach.
The coaching change came on the heels of back-to-back losses to the Montreal Canadiens that dropped the Red Wings to seventh place in the Atlantic Division, as well as a 4-0 loss at home to the St. Louis Blues in which fans booed loudly. Detroit has lost nine of its last 12 games.
Lalonde was hired in 2022 to help the Red Wings get back to the playoffs as general manager Steve Yzerman brought in veterans to help achieve that goal after a years-long rebuilding process. The first-year NHL coach spent four seasons as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning, reaching the Stanley Cup Final in his final three seasons there.
The Red Wings finished their first season in seventh place, missed the playoffs on a tiebreaker last season, and started the current season 13-17-4.
Detroit lost four players who combined for 63 goals last season and have been unable to make up for it. Free agent signee Vladimir Tarasenko has four and 12 points. A revitalized Patrick Kane scored five goals and 14 points. Injuries also affected the team.
The Red Wings rank in the bottom four in goals per game and have the eighth-worst goals against average and second-worst penalty kill. They give up the fifth-most shots per game and are among the worst teams in giveaways per game.
Detroit hasn’t made the playoffs since 2015-16. The Red Wings had made a playoff run 25 seasons before that.
The Red Wings are the fourth team in the NHL to field a practice squad this season, following the Boston Bruins, Blues and Chicago Blackhawks.
