SHREVEPORT, La. – The roads are packed with families traveling for Christmas or doing last-minute shopping.
Traffic was already bad today in many areas, and with storms possible tomorrow, that could make travel even worse.
This year, AAA expects a record number of vacation travelers by car and air. If you are traveling by car, Shreveport Police suggest using extra caution.
“Remember that you are sharing the road with other people. We encourage those who will be on the roads before and after Christmas to do so responsibly. Try to limit the amount of alcohol you drink, especially if you will be driving. We have seen an influx in DWIs in recent years in This time period,” said Cpl. Chris Bordelon, public information officer for the Shreveport Police Department.
If you are traveling by plane, remember to arrive early to pass through the checkpoints.
“So, if you’re flying on American, Delta or United, we always recommend being here at least one hour before the scheduled departure time, and if you’re flying to Las Vegas, be here at least two hours before the scheduled departure time,” he said. “We saw several flights today at or near full capacity,” said Mark Crawford, director of business development at Shreveport Regional Airport.
Don’t let the chance of rain and storms tomorrow ruin your vacation travel plans.
“Slow down a little, and allow some extra time to get to the areas you are traveling to. And remember to always use your lights and flashers when you are driving. Finally, if the weather is very difficult to drive, it is always a good idea to stop on the side of the road,” Bordelon said. And wait for the weather to improve.”
Hopefully the rain won’t impact flights to and from Shreveport Regional Airport.
“We always recommend checking with your airline for the latest flight status, and if there are any weather delays, they will be able to help you rebook anything if necessary or keep you up to date with the latest information,” Crawford said.
Shreveport Regional Airport expects flights after Christmas to be at or near full capacity. They offered more flights from each airline than last year.
